One hot potato

It's not the kind of recognition I would want for my hometown.

But apparently, there was some kind of argument over who has had the highest temperature ever recorded. So, a committee was formed to investigate.

For years, El Azizia, Libya, held the distinction of having the highest temperature ever recorded – 136.4°F on September 13, 1922. However, there was some controversy over the validity of the recording. So, the committee – a special panel of meteorological experts from all over the world – studied the issue for a couple of years (2010-2012).

The decision? The credit for the highest temperature ever goes to Furnace Creek in Death Valley, California, with a temperature of 134°F recorded on July 10, 1913.

So, it may not be 134°F degrees where you are right now, but still, it might be hot enough for these reminders about how to stay cool. Here in the Dallas area, where the temperatures have been over a 100 for what seems like weeks, we'll take all the tips we can to stay cool. And, of course, record temperatures are being set all over the world.

We are certainly sweating (and hoping) the Death Valley record holds.
